Industrial Valves Production & Quality Control
Industrial valve performance depends on suitable materials, controlled manufacturing processes, accurate machining, reliable assembly and thorough inspection. Explore the production stages of cast and forged industrial valves and the quality checks commonly used to verify their conformity with applicable specifications.
- Cast and forged valve production
- Raw-material and dimensional inspection
- Non-destructive examination where specified
- Pressure and leakage testing
- Final inspection and quality documentation
From Raw Material to Finished Industrial Valve
Industrial valves are produced through different manufacturing routes depending on their design, size, pressure class, material and intended service. Cast valves are made by pouring molten metal into moulds, while forged valves are formed by applying compressive force to heated metal. Both routes require suitable machining, assembly and inspection.
Material & Process Selection
Material grade, valve design, pressure-temperature requirements and applicable specifications guide the production route and inspection plan.
Controlled Manufacturing
Casting or forging is followed by heat treatment where required, machining, component preparation and assembly.
Inspection & Verification
Inspection and testing verify that the valve meets the agreed drawing, purchase specification and applicable standard requirements.
Industrial Valve Production Flowcharts
Compare the typical production stages for cast and forged industrial valves. Actual sequences may vary according to the valve type, material, design, size and manufacturing specification.

Cast Industrial Valve Production Process
Casting is commonly used to produce valve bodies and bonnets with complex shapes and internal passages. The quality of the finished component depends on the casting process, material control, heat treatment where required, machining and inspection.
1. Design, Pattern & Mould Preparation
Engineering drawings establish the valve geometry, dimensions and manufacturing requirements. Patterns and moulds are prepared to form the required external shape, while cores create internal cavities where needed.
2. Melting & Casting
The selected metal is melted and poured into the prepared mould. Process controls may include melt chemistry, pouring conditions and mould preparation according to the approved procedure.
3. Cleaning & Heat Treatment
After solidification, the casting is removed, cleaned and prepared for subsequent operations. Heat treatment is performed when required by the material grade or applicable specification.
4. Machining & Assembly
Machining brings critical surfaces and dimensions within the required tolerances. Valve internals are then assembled, with attention to seating surfaces, stem movement and component fit.
Forged Industrial Valve Production Process
Forging forms metal under compressive force and is used for many valve components, including bodies and bonnets for suitable valve designs. The production route is selected according to component geometry, material requirements and service conditions.
1. Material Selection & Preparation
Billets, bars or forging stock are selected to meet the specified material grade and product requirements. Stock is identified and cut to the required size before forging.
2. Heating & Forging
For hot-forging operations, the material is heated to the prescribed temperature and shaped using suitable forging equipment and dies. Process control helps achieve the required component form.
3. Heat Treatment & Machining
Heat treatment is applied as required by the material specification. Machining establishes the final dimensions, connection details, internal passages and seating surfaces.
4. Assembly & Verification
The valve is assembled using the specified components. Dimensional inspection, material verification, pressure testing and other checks are performed according to the applicable inspection requirements.
Quality Control & Inspection of Industrial Valves
Quality control helps verify that valve materials, manufacturing operations, dimensions, assembly and testing meet the agreed technical requirements. The inspection scope depends on valve type, material, pressure class, service conditions and the purchase specification.
Raw-Material Inspection
Incoming materials and components are checked against purchase and material requirements.
- Material grade and identification
- Heat or batch number traceability
- Material test certificates, where specified
- Visual condition and surface examination
In-Process Inspection
Checks during manufacturing help identify deviations before final assembly.
- Critical dimensions and machining
- Flange dimensions and facing
- Component fit and surface condition
- Heat-treatment records where applicable
Non-Destructive Testing
Specified examination methods may be used to assess component integrity.
- Visual testing (VT)
- Liquid penetrant testing (PT)
- Magnetic particle testing (MT)
- Radiographic or ultrasonic testing where required
Dimensional Inspection
Measurements are compared with approved drawings and specifications.
- Face-to-face or end-to-end dimensions
- Flange drilling and dimensions
- Critical bore and component dimensions
- Visual workmanship checks
Assembly & Functional Checks
Assembly checks help confirm correct operation and component installation.
- Correct component identification
- Stem and operating mechanism movement
- Seat and closure component condition
- Specified functional checks
Final Quality Verification
Final checks confirm that the valve and its records meet order requirements.
- Marking and nameplate details
- Required test reports and certificates
- Preservation and end protection
- Packing and dispatch verification
Industrial Valve Pressure & Leakage Testing
Pressure and leakage testing is used to verify specified pressure boundary integrity and closure performance. The test medium, pressure, duration, acceptance criteria and sequence must follow the applicable valve standard and approved test procedure.
Shell Pressure Test
The shell test evaluates the pressure-containing boundary of the assembled valve body and bonnet. Inspection focuses on leakage or other indications defined by the applicable test requirements.
Closure / Seat Leakage Test
The closure test checks the valve’s shut-off performance under the specified test conditions. Permitted leakage, if any, depends on the valve type and applicable acceptance criteria.
Backseat Test, Where Applicable
For valve designs with a backseat feature, a backseat test may be specified to evaluate that feature under the required conditions.
Test Records & Acceptance
Test records may document valve identification, test medium, pressure, duration, results and acceptance status according to the project or purchase requirements.
Final Inspection & Quality Documentation
Before dispatch, the required final checks and records are reviewed against the purchase order, approved drawings and inspection plan. Documentation requirements vary by project and customer specification.

Applicable Industrial Valve Standards
Industrial valves may be designed, manufactured, inspected and tested against recognized standards. The correct standard and edition depend on valve design, material, size, rating and contractual requirements.

| API 598 | Valve inspection and testing | Specified inspection and pressure testing of applicable valves |
| ASME B16.34 | Valves — flanged, threaded and welding end | Design, pressure-temperature ratings, materials and related requirements |
| API 600 | Steel gate valves | Applicable steel gate valve designs within the standard's scope |
| API 602 | Compact steel gate, globe and check valves | Applicable small-bore steel valve designs within the standard's scope |
| ASTM A216/A216M | Carbon steel castings for pressure-containing service | Material requirements for applicable cast carbon steel components |
| ASTM A105/A105M | Carbon steel forgings for piping applications | Applicable forged carbon steel components |
